Mark Cavendish MBE
Cycling legend and former world road champion Mark Cavendish is the Race Ambassador for the inaugural event.
The British professional started off his cycling career as an elite track cyclist winning gold in the Madison at the 2005 and 2008 world championships. He carried on to win gold again in 2016 as well as an individual silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in the Omnium.
In his first professional season on the road, Cavendish achieved a record eleven wins. Since then he has won thirty Tour de France stages, which puts him second on the all-time list, and in 2012 he became the first person to win the final Champs-Élysées stage in four consecutive years. Other notable road wins include the 2009 Milan – San Remo classic and the points classification in all three of the grand tours: 2010 Vuelta a España, 2011 Tour de France and the 2013 Giro d’Italia.
Ahead of the event Mark has said, “I’m really looking forward to playing a part in the first Abu Dhabi to Al Ain Classic. The event is a fantastic new initiative within cycling and it’s a privilege to be involved.”
